With so much parity involved in this weekend’s event, onlookers witnessed dozens of teams representing several age cohorts. A handful of these platoons orchestrated an undefeated performance during the three-day gauntlet while others overcame on-court obstacles in an impressive fashion.
Coached by Helene Norris, Elevate Elite Richmond’s 12U girls team did exactly that. Despite not hoisting a championship trophy on the tournament’s final day, Norris’ group appeared in the 12U girls title game for the Stripes Bracket.
Like so many other groups, the program’s first-time playing in the U.S. Open served as an opportunity to experience top-notch adversary while focusing on development and fundamentals.
"It's really all about learning," Norris said. "For a lot of them, this is the first high-caliber tournament that they participated in. There were some nerves but to get a taste of what it's like to compete at a high level was amazing."
With games typically commencing around 8:00 a.m. ET and concluding in the evening, hundreds of aspiring athletes experienced what it was like to suit up under the red, white and blue umbrella.
Regardless of the stage or stakes, the association with USA Basketball proved meaningful. With posters of men’s and women’s national teamers adorning the walls along baselines, the scene served as a reminder of what it takes to become an elite contributor on and off the floor.
"It's a privilege and it's a responsibility," Norris said. "We feel very honored to be able to compete here. Everything ran very smoothly. Everybody was very respectful and very helpful, and we had a great experience.
"I told my girls before the games that it's a gift. We have a lot of people to thank. USA Basketball has been amazing.”
USA Basketball’s national youth tournament circuit continues with 9th and 10th grade championships at the 2024 NCAA College Basketball Academy in Rock Hill, South Carolina. Games tip off July 22 for the men, with the women beginning on July 26.
