The USA (1-0) started their AmeriCup journey with a 105-93 win over the Bahamas (0-1) on Saturday afternoon at the 2025 FIBA Men's AmeriCup in Managua, Nicaragua.
The USA game was the first-ever between the USA and the Bahamas at the AmeriCup. The USA improves to 70-12 all-time at the AmeriCup.
Postgame Notes
Starting Out: Jerian Grant, Langston Galloway, Cam Reynolds, Tyler Cavanaugh and Robert Baker II started the game for the United States. Zach Auguste, Jack Cooley, Jarell Eddie, Grant and Speedy Smith made their USA Basketball debuts. AmeriCup Qualifying stalwarts Jahmi’us Ramsey and Javonte Smart also saw action in Saturday’s win.
Bringing the Drama: Trailing 47-56 with six minutes left in the third quarter, the USA went on a 13-4 run to tie the game at 60 apiece off an Auguste basket and free throw with 3:11 left in the quarter. The game was back and forth for the rest of the frame as Bahamas took a 65-64 lead to the final quarter. The United States found their rhythm in the early stages of the fourth quarter to ultimately take an 80-72 lead with 3:11 to play in the game. But the Bahamians wouldn’t go away, finding a way to tie the game at 84 as time expired.
Bahamas led by as many as three, 87-84, in the overtime period. Reynolds’ second 3-pointer of the night gave the U.S. their first lead of extra time at 88-87 with 3:27 to play. The Americans remained safely in control from that point and outscored Bahamas 21-9 in overtime to earn the win.
The game was only the USA’s second overtime contest at the AmeriCup. Their only other overtime game came in the 1993 AmeriCup semifinals with a 123-107 victory over Argentina. The USA went on to win the gold medal over Puerto Rico.
Man of the Month: Auguste, in his USA Basketball debut, led the squad with 28 points, including 18 in the second half and overtime. He shot 9-of-14 from the field (64.3%) and 9-of-13 from the line (69.2%). He also pulled down seven rebounds and came away with two steals.
Board Certified: Cavanaugh recorded the USA’s only double-double with 13 points (5-9 FG, 2-2 FT) and a game-best 14 rebounds (5 OR). He added a game-high four blocks, matching Bahamas’ team total. On the night, the Americans outrebounded Bahamas 54-42.
No I in Team: Among the American starters, four of five scored in double figures including Galloway with 14, Cavanaugh with 13, Grant with 11 and Reynolds with 10. The USA reserves, led by Auguste, contributed 48 points off the bench and outscored the Bahamian bench 48-13.
