The USA outlasted Brazil 92-84 on Sunday night in Santiago, Chile, to win the 2025 FIBA Women’s AmeriCup and clinch a berth at the 2026 FIBA Women’s World Cup in Berlin.
The win marks the women’s program’s fifth FIBA AmeriCup title. The USA moves to 4-6 against Brazil and 42-9 all-time at the AmeriCup.
Canada won the bronze medal over Argentina 76-75 in a double-overtime.
Postgame Notes
Run Away with USA: The USA trailed 69-67 with 8:59 left to play before going on a 9-0 run over the next 2+ minutes to take a 76-69 lead, punctuated by an Edwards layup. The United States would go on to lead by 10 in the period.
Elite Company: Blakes highlighted the tournament’s All-Star Five and won MVP following a week that saw her lead her squad with 14.0 points, 3.4 rebounds and 2.0 steals in 22.0 minutes per game.
Hidalgo joined Blakes on the All-Star squad with averages of 12.4 points, 3.3 rebounds, 4.6 assists and 3.1 steals in 20.0 minutes per game.
It All Comes Down to This: The USA used Raegan Beers, Mikayla Blakes, Joyce Edwards, Madison Booker and Olivia Miles to start in Sunday’s finale. Edwards started all seven games, while Blakes and Miles started 6 and 5, respectively.
Built for the Big Stage: Blakes paced the USA with 27 points (11-24 FG) and 6 rebounds. Tonight was the second time Blakes led the USA in scoring (15 vs. Colombia). Hannah Hidalgo, who was pivotal in the final period, finished the game with 16 points, 7 rebounds, 4 assists and 2 steals. Edwards was also in double figures with 11 points and 7 rebounds.
Grab-N-Go: The U.S. and Brazil came into tonight’s game virtually even in rebounds over the last six games (USA: 54.2 rpg, BRA: 52.8 rpg). The Americans outrebounded the Brazilians 46-35. The red, white and blue turned their advantage on the glass into 21 fastbreak points (Brazil, 3).
Raising the Bar: The USA set multiple individual and team records during the tournament. Notably, the Americans dished 161 total assists (23.0 apg) to break the tournament record (150, USA in 2019). With 50 assists, including 9 tonight, Miles averaged 7.1 dimes a game to break the previous mark of 5.6 per game by Teresa Edwards in 2007.
As a unit, the U.S. took 17.6 steals per contest (123 total), falling just shy of the 18.4 steals mark set in 1993. However, Hidalgo tallied 22 steals in the USA’s seven games to set the USA player record for steals (Ruthie Bolton, 1993, 21 steals, 3.0 spg).
