Postgame Notes
Gold Mine: The U.S. has won the most gold medals in FIBA U19 Men’s World Cup history, earning their ninth tonight. The previous eight gold medals came in 2021, 2019, 2015, 2013, 2009, 1991, 1983 and 1979. Except for the 1983 squad, all of the other USA gold medal teams completed the feat with an unblemished record.
The U.S. has medaled 13 times in U19 competition, the most of any country. In addition to nine gold medals, the USA has captured the silver three times (1987, 1999, 2007) and bronze once (2017). No other federation has more than four medals (France has two silver and two bronze).
Golden Wildcat: Head coach Tommy Lloyd becomes the second University of Arizona head coach to lead a USA Men’s U19 National Team to the gold medal at the FIBA U19 World Cup, joining Sean Miller (2015). Lloyd (2024, 2025) also joins Billy Donovan as the second coach to win FIBA U18 Men’s AmeriCup and U19 gold medals in back-to-back summers. Donovan did so in 2012 (U18) and 2013 (U19).
Four-Peat: Becoming the most decorated USA men’s junior national team player in history, Koa Peat won his fourth gold medal with USA Basketball. Peat’s historic run began in 2022 at the FIBA U17 Men’s World Cup, followed by the 2023 FIBA U16 Men’s AmeriCup, then the 2024 FIBA U17 Men’s World Cup and concluding today at the 2025 FIBA U19 Men’s World Cup. Per FIBA, at the international level, Peat is the only men’s player with three junior World Cup gold medals.
Most Valuable Player: AJ Dybantsa was voted MVP of the 2025 FIBA U19 Men’s World Cup. Dybantsa had 11 points, 6 rebounds, 2 assists and 1 steal in 19 minutes in the gold medal game. Over seven games, he contributed 14.3 points, 4.1 rebounds and 2.3 rebounds in 20.0 minutes per game.
All-Star Five: Dybantsa and Mikel Brown Jr. were named to the 2025 FIBA U19 Men’s World Cup All-Star Five for their efforts in Switzerland. Dybantsa also earned the distinction at the 2024 FIBA U17 Men’s World Cup in Istanbul.
Brown Jr. averaged team bests of 14.9 points and 6.1 assists, while connecting on 20 3-pointers across seven games.
Stay Gold, Ponyboy: Among the records broken by the U.S. this tournament, the all-time scoring average stands out. The USA scored 100+ points in six consecutive games, the first team to do so, and ended with an average of 114.6 per game. That mark surpasses the Yugoslavia team in 1987, which averaged 108.9 points per contest. The previous scoring average high for an American squad was 104.7 and came in 1979, now ranking fourth all-time (3rd, Soviet Union, 105.6 ppg, 1991).
