The Americans close Group Play on July 1 against Cameroon (0-2).
Postgame Notes
Wow: Tonight marked the eighth matchup between the USA and France in U19 play. Traditionally close contests, tonight’s margin of victory (31) ranks second in series history. The largest (37) gap between the two sides came in 1995 when the U.S. prevailed 92-55 in Athens, Greece.
Congratulations: Fresh off a 12-point and 7-assist effort against Australia on Saturday, Mikel Brown Jr. came out hot against France. In eight first quarter minutes, Brown Jr. knocked down four 3-pointers without a miss. He finished the game with six 3-pointers, becoming the first American with five-or-more makes since 2013 when Rasheed Sulaimon hit five 3's against Brazil in Prague, Czechia. His final stat line for the night was 24 points (8-11 FG, 6-9 3FG, 2-2 FT) and 4 assists.
Rock Star: Koa Peat delivered for the USA once again. His 13 first-half points were a game best. In 25 minutes of action, Peat finished with 17 points, 3 rebounds, 2 steals and 2 blocks. Through two games, his 34 points are tied for the most on the U.S. squad.
Guy For That: AJ Dybantsa did a little of everything against France. His 16 point and 4 rebound effort was capped off by a third-quarter alley-oop from Jasper Johnson. Dybantsa is one of three players (Brown Jr., Peat) to score at least 10 points in each of the first two games.
I Had Some Help: The U.S. forced France into 25 turnovers, 4 more than they frustrated Australia (21) into in the first game of the competition. By virtue of their stingy defense, the U.S. earned 37 points off those turnovers (the USA tallied 23 points off Australian miscues, for those keeping score at home).
Fortnight: Two weeks after the USA assembled in Colorado Springs, the Men’s U19 National Team jumped to 2-0 to open the U19 World Cup in Lausanne. Since 1979, the U.S. has started U19 competition 2-0 16 times. Of the previous 15 occurrences, the Americans have brought home a medal 12 times with eight of those being the gold.
