15-member 2025-28 USA Basketball Board of Directors seated
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colorado (Oct. 23, 2024) – Retired Gen. Martin E. Dempsey, the 18th Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, has been reelected USA Basketball chairperson for the 2025-28 quadrennium, a role he has served since 2016. Dempsey will lead the 15-member USA Basketball Board of Directors, who will be seated through 2028. The announcement was made following the USA Basketball annual Board of Directors meeting in Colorado Springs.
In addition to Dempsey, the 2025-28 USA Basketball Board of Directors includes NBA appointees Joe Dumars, NBA executive vice president, head of basketball operations; and Mark Tatum, NBA deputy commissioner and chief operating officer; NCAA appointees Dan Gavitt, NCAA senior vice president of basketball; Nina King, Duke University vice president/director of athletics; and Greg Sankey, Southeastern Conference commissioner; at-large representatives Bethany Donaphin, WNBA head of league operations; and Lynn Holzman, NCAA vice president of women’s basketball; organizational membership/affiliate director Christopher Parker, National Junior College Athletic Association president and CEO; at-large/independent member John W. Rogers Jr., Ariel Investments founder, chairman, co-CEO and CIO; and athlete representatives Shareef Abdur-Rahim, 2000 Olympic gold medalist; Seimone Augustus, 2008, 2012 and 2016 Olympic gold medalist; Harrison Barnes, 2016 Olympic gold medalist; Sylvia Fowles, 2008, 2012, 2016 and 2020 Olympic gold medalist; and Lindsay Whalen, 2012 and 2016 Olympic gold medalist.

Dempsey retired in 2015 after 41 years of military service. He served as the Chief of Staff of the United States Army and as the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff (2011-15). As Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, he was the senior officer in the U.S. Armed Forces and the U.S. military advisor to the Secretary of Defense and to President Barack Obama.
Appointed special adviser to NBA Commissioner Adam Silver in January 2016, Dempsey provided the NBA with counsel on leadership and service, while continuing to support the league’s military and youth basketball initiatives. USA Basketball Enters 11-Year Agreement with NBCUniversal
USA Basketball has entered a media agreement with NBCUniversal (NBCU) to distribute the USA Basketball Showcase and other USA Basketball events on NBC, USA Network and Peacock through 2036.
As part of the deal, NBCU will exclusively distribute the USA Basketball Showcase (senior national team pre-FIBA World Cup and pre-Olympics exhibitions) that take place over the course of the agreement. Beginning in 2025, USA Network and/or Peacock will distribute the Nike Hoop Summit.
Additionally, Xfinity will become the Exclusive TV Service of USA Basketball. The partnership will include collaboration on marketing and storytelling opportunities and activations at marquee USA Basketball events.
“USA Basketball is thrilled to partner with NBC Sports to bring the USA Basketball Showcase and more exciting USA Basketball content to fans across the country,” USA Basketball CEO Jim Tooley said. “As a longtime supporter of USA Basketball and our national team programs, NBC Sports is going to be a great partner, especially as we look toward 2028 and our continued quest for excellence on the court.”
“We’re excited to extend our existing partnership to now include games for the Men’s and Women’s teams on NBC and Peacock leading up to both the Summer Olympics and FIBA World Cup,” said Rick Cordella, president of NBC Sports. “Showcasing these national teams and the tremendous athletes playing on them is an important part of growing the game.”
At the Olympic Games Paris 2024, which were distributed on NBCU platforms, including Peacock, USA Basketball was represented by four teams, including 5-on-5 men and women and 3x3 men and women. The USA women won a record eighth consecutive Olympic gold medal, while the USA men won their fifth straight gold medal with both teams defeating France in the final. The 3x3 women’s team won bronze after winning six of their last seven games.
Bohuny Honored with USA Basketball Steitz Award
Kim Bohuny, a longtime NBA executive, has been honored with the USA Basketball Edward S. Steitz award for her valuable contributions to USA Basketball and international basketball. Bohuny served more than two decades on the USA Basketball Board of Directors.
With the NBA, Bohuny’s team has expanded the league’s global reach through basketball development programs including the Jr. NBA/Jr. WNBA, NBA Basketball School, NBA Academy and Basketball Without Borders as well as major international initiatives such as the Basketball Africa League.
“Kim’s contributions to USA Basketball and the international basketball community have been extraordinary and impactful. She has been a tremendous influence on so many basketball federations worldwide and is greatly respected for her work at all levels of the game,” USA Basketball CEO Jim Tooley said. “I want to personally thank Kim for her service to USA Basketball and for her friendship. It’s my pleasure to honor her with USA Basketball’s most prestigious award - the Steitz Award.”
The Steitz Award is named in memory of Edward S. Steitz. The longtime director of athletics at Springfield College (MA), Steitz was a recognized worldwide authority on the rules of basketball and one of the original founders and a past president of USA Basketball's predecessors, the Basketball Federation of the USA (BFUSA) and the Amateur Basketball Association of the United States of America (ABAUSA).
