The USA Basketball Showcase wrapped up Tuesday night with the USA Women's National Team's 84-57 win over Germany in London. The game was the final tune-up before group play at the Olympic Games Paris 2024 opens for the USA on June 29 vs. Japan.
Fanfare: Tonight’s attendance marked 8,694 fans and is the largest crowd to attend a women’s basketball game at The O2 since the 2012 London Olympics.
Showcase Stats: The USA women move to 22-5 since 2000 in pre-Olympic exhibition games. Tonight’s game was the second and final warm-up for the women’s team after falling 109-117 to Team WNBA at the WNBA All-Star Game Saturday in Phoenix.
Germany will make their Olympic debut in Paris and are set to face the USA in the teams’ final Group C game on Aug. 4 in Lille, France.
Starting Out: On the floor to start tonight’s game were Chelsea Gray, Diana Taurasi, Napheesa Collier, Breanna Stewart and A’ja Wilson.
Hot to Trot: The United States went out to a 13-4 lead until the 5:27 mark of the 1st quarter before Germany took a timeout. In that span, Stewart and Wilson accounted for 4 points each and Wilson added 5 rebounds. By the end of the half, the USA owned a 44-32 edge.
The USA dictated the pace throughout the game, owning a 25-5 advantage on the fastbreak.
Happy to Help: In the first half, the USA made 15 field goals with assists on 14 of them, led by 3 each from Gray and Alyssa Thomas. The U.S. registered 27 assists on 30 makes from the floor on the night with 5 total coming off Stewart’s hands. All 11 players who appeared in the game proffered at least 1 assist.
A+ A’ja: Wilson led the way for the USA with game highs of 19 points (7-13 FG, 5-5 FT), 14 rebounds, 2 steals and 2 blocks in 25:15. She started the game strong, notching 10 points and 8 rebounds in the first half. On Saturday night in the WNBA All-Star Game, Wilson scored 22 points.
Teamwork Makes the Dreamwork: The USA’s depth was on full display Tuesday night, with the bench outscoring Germany’s 37-4. Jewell Loyd contributed 11 points (4-6 FG, 2-4 3FG, 1-2 FT) to lead all bench scorers. Ten of the 11 USA players who saw game action tonight notched points for the USA.
