The USA Basketball Men’s U17 National Team won 2024 FIBA U17 Men’s World Cup gold medal with a 129-88 victory over Italy on Sunday in Istanbul. The Americans have won gold in each iteration of the FIBA U17 Men’s World Cup, dating back to 2010.
The 41-point victory is the second largest in a FIBA U17 final, just under the 43-point differential in 2018 (USA defeated France 95-52).
Turkey defeated New Zealand earlier in the day 101-78 to win the bronze medal.
TEAM NOTES
Gold Medals: The 2024 USA Basketball Men’s U17 National Team etched their name in the history book as the seventh straight U.S. squad to win the gold medal at the FIBA U17 Men’s World Cup. The Americans are unbeaten in U17 play with a staggering 51-0 all-time record, owning the gold medal in every edition of the event (2010, 2012, 2014, 2016, 2018, 2022, 2024).
Only Two: USA head coach Sharman White becomes the second U.S. coach to lead a team to FIBA U17 Men’s World Cup gold. At the helm in 2022, White’s back-to-back golds puts him in rare company with Don Showalter. A record that might not be broken, Showalter coached the first five USA U17 teams to gold medals (2010, 2012, 2014, 2016, 2018).
Unparallel Success: Breaking records at a record-breaking pace, the USA set the bar even higher at the 2024 FIBA U17 Men’s World Cup. The American average margin of victory this year was 64.3, a whopping 10.6 points better than their previous best for a U17 competition (53.7 in 2018). The U.S. won four games by 60-plus points in Turkey (a margin done seven times by the USA in the last six U17’s combined).
Setting Expectations: The 146 points scored against China set the FIBA U17 Men’s World Cup record for points in a game. Executing at the highest level in Istanbul, the U.S. would score 140-or-more points in three games at the competition (141 vs. Philippines; 145 vs. New Zealand). In the history of U17, the USA has scored over 120 points 12 times (five came in 2024).
