The USA Basketball Men’s U17 National Team advanced to the quarterfinals of the 2024 FIBA U17 Men’s World Cup via their 141-45 victory over Philippines on Wednesday in Istanbul.
The Americans will face the winner of the Round of 16 contest between Argentina and Canada.
TEAM NOTES
Only Time Will Tell: A record-breaking bunch, the U.S. is approaching their 50th all-time victory at a FIBA U17 Men’s World Cup. Entering the 2024 edition, the Americans were 44-0 but adding in the four wins this week improves the USA’s record to 48-0 (def. France, Guinea, China & Philippines).
All For One & One For All: In the previous six FIBA U17 Men’s World Cups, the U.S. had won by 60-or-more points on seven occasions. In four games this year, that has happened three times. Today, the U.S. defeated the Philippines by 96 (141-45) and the others occurred in group play (won by 75 vs. Guinea, won by 84 vs. China).
Alls Well That Ends Well: The USA has been all business in the fourth quarter. Including today, the U.S. has held their opponents to 10 points-or-less in the final frame. The Philippines managed 10 points during the fourth today while China mustered nine and Guinea mustered eight.
PLAYER NOTES
Nerves Of Steel: He made it look easy but Brandon McCory Jr. Was excellent swiping the ball against Philippines. He has recorded multiple steals in three of four games at the competition, highlighted by his four today (U.S. had a total of 14 steals in the game).
Busy As A Bee: It was a strong start for Cameron Boozer. Helping the U.S. to a 43-13 first quarter lead, Cameron Boozer scored 10 points on 5-of-5 shooting in the opening frame. He ended up scoring 20-plus for the third time (29 vs. France, 20 vs. China) this tournament with 20 points tonight. Koa Peat led the team in scoring (22 points).
Labor Of Love: Looking at the stats, you can tell that Caleb Holt had an impactful effort. Registering 14 points, five rebounds, six assists and four steals in 19 minutes, it would be hard to find someone with a more well-rounded performance.
