The USA booked their trip to the 2024 FIBA U18 Men’s AmeriCup gold medal game with a decisive 107-69 semifinal victory over Canada on Saturday at Estadio Obras Sanitarias in Buenos Aires. The red, white and blue now hold a 9-0 record against Canada at the event.
The U.S. will play for their seventh straight U18 championship and 11th overall on Sunday. The team will match up against the winner of the Argentina-Dominican Republic semifinal.
TEAM NOTES
The Run Down: The United States went on a run to end the first quarter and set the tone for the 38-point win. Darius Acuff Jr. put the U.S. ahead 10-9 with 6:15 to play in the first quarter, which kickstarted a 20-5 run to end the frame with a 13-point lead (27-14). The team held a double-digit lead the rest of the way.
Pass the Glass: The U.S. was strong inside the paint in tonight’s contest. The team outrebounded Canada, 59-38. It was a group effort on the glass as six players tallied 6+ rebounds.
Driving Force: A large factor in the USA’s win was their presence in the paint on both ends of the floor. The team registered 64 points in the paint and limited Canada to 34 in the contest.
Shooting Stats: The USA shot 51.2% (44-86 FG) from the floor and 71.4% (10-14 FT) from the line. Canada shot 35.7% (25-70 FG) from the field and 47.8% (11-23 FT) from the charity stripe. The Americans also held the Canadians to 34.0% (17-50) from inside the arc.
PLAYER NOTES
Reid it and Weep: Derrion Reid finished with his second straight double-double at the AmeriCup, logging 12 points (6-8 FG), 10 rebounds, 3 assists and 1 steal. Reid ties Morez Johnson Jr. for the most double-doubles on the team.
Double Figures: The U.S. had eight players finish with 10-or-more points. In addition to Reid, Acuff Jr. (12), Jeremiah Fears (12), Trey McKenney (12), Jasper Johnson (11), Daniel Jacobsen (10), Johnson Jr. (10) and Shelton Henderson (10) logged over 10 points apiece.
