AMSTERDAM (Oct. 7, 2023) – Team Miami suffered a narrow defeat to Vienna in the finals of the 2023 FIBA 3x3 Men’s World Tour Amsterdam Masters on Saturday in Amsterdam, Netherlands. The second-place finish marks Team Miami’s sixth straight top-4 finish on the World Tour, including their second runner-up finish of the campaign.
In a rematch of a Saturday pool play game, Vienna got revenge on Miami in the finals, winning the tightly contested battle, 21-19. Jimmer Fredette put Miami into the lead, 8-7, with a 2-pointer with just under seven minutes remaining. Vienna tried to pull away multiple times, but Miami hung tough, and grabbed a 19-18 lead with 3:28 remaining when the Americans went on a 6-1 run. Both teams had empty possessions before Vienna scored the game’s final three points. Fredette led Miami with 10 points. Dylan Travis pulled down a team-high five boards.
Team Miami used a 21-15 win over Partizan in the semifinals to advance to the championship game. Neither team led by more than three points until the 4:29 mark when a Kareem Maddox basket put Miami up 15-11. The Americans closed the game on a 5-2 run. Canyon Barry led Miami with seven points. Fredette contributed six points and Maddox tallied five points.
In the quarterfinals, the Americans notched a wire-to-wire 21-16 win over Antwerp. With the game tied 15-15 with just over two minutes remaining, the American team closed the game on a 6-1 run behind the shooting of Fredette and Maddox, who combined to score 18 of the team’s 21 points. Fredette and Maddox led Miami in scoring with 10 and eight points, respectively.
Miami, who will next compete at the Doha Challenger on Oct 10-11, went 2-0 in Pool Play on Saturday, beating Utrecht 21-12 before topping Vienna 22-17. Miami had three players in the top 10 for scoring: Miami had three players in the top 10 for overall scoring in the competition: Fredette (1st, 40 points), Maddox (3rd, 29), Barry (10th, 21).
