VIENNA, Austria (May 30, 2023) – The USA women started their 2023 FIBA 3x3 Women’s World Cup journey Tuesday in Vienna with Pool C play against Canada and Hungary.
Playing on Rathausplatz in front of Vienna’s City Hall, the U.S. finished the day on a winning note, taking the 20-10 decision over Hungary.
The Americans raced out to a 6-1 lead by the 7:20 mark. Hungary responded to close the gap, 9-6, before the U.S. railed off seven in a row, during which each teammate scored and Cameron Brink had three points, to secure a 17-6 advantage with 2:32 remaining.
The Americans hit 14 of their 21 attempts from 1-point while outrebounding Hungary 16-11.
Linnae Harper, the U.S.’s leading scorer on the day, factored for a game-high eight points (5-6 1FG, 1-3 2FG, 1-2 FT). Cierra Burdick was active on the glass with a game-best six boards along with three points and three key assists. Hailey Van Lith went for five points and three rebounds. Brink, in her 3x3 international debut, swatted two balls in each game and added four points and three rebounds against Hungary.
Klaudia Papp scored seven of Hungary’s 10 points.
The U.S. dropped its first contest to Canada, 16-13, in a physical game that saw the Americans leading 7-1 with 5:52 to play. After conceding the opening 1-pointer to Canada, the U.S. ticked a 7-0 run over a little more than three minutes. Canada responded with its own 9-2 run to the 2:21 mark.
Tied at 13 with 1:04 to play, Canada went on to score the last three points in a span of 30 seconds, rebounding from an earlier overtime loss to Czech Republic.
Harper led the USA with six points and three rebounds. Van Lith added three points and a game-high-tying five rebounds, while Burdick added three buckets. Brink had one point, three rebounds and a game-best two blocks.
Michelle Plouffe led Canada with eight points and five boards.
Women's pool play continues Thursday, June 1 with the U.S. facing Mongolia at 5 a.m. ET followed by Czech Republic at 7:25 a.m. ET. Should the U.S. qualify, the play-in round and quarterfinals are scheduled for Saturday, June 3, followed by the semifinals and championship on Sunday, June 4.
