Joins head coach Steve Kerr, assistants Erik Spoelstra and Mark Few through 2024
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colorado – USA Basketball announced today the selection of the L.A. Clippers head coach Tyronn Lue as a 2022-24 USA Basketball Men’s National Team assistant coach. Lue will work alongside head coach Steve Kerr (Golden State Warriors) and assistant coaches Erik Spoelstra (Miami Heat) and Mark Few (Gonzaga). Phoenix Suns head coach Monty Williams, who was previously named to the coaching staff, is unable to serve on the staff due to family commitments.
“I’m excited to extend this opportunity to Coach Lue as the United States looks to continue its success on the international stage,” said Grant Hill, managing director, USA Basketball Men’s National Team. “Led by Coach Kerr, this staff brings decades of experience at the NBA, collegiate and international levels, and I’m looking forward to watching them come together to lead the USA.
“I want to thank Coach Williams for his commitment to USA Basketball and absolutely understand the difficult choice he made. As a longtime men’s national team coach, he is an important member of the USA Basketball family.”
As assistant coach, Lue will help lead the USA Men’s National Team through 2024, including at all training camps, exhibitions, the 2023 FIBA World Cup and the Paris 2024 Olympics.
“I am truly honored to represent our country and join this great group of coaches,” Lue said. “Coaching USA Basketball has always been a dream of mine, and I’m humbled to take on the challenge. Thank you to Steve, Grant and USA Basketball’s leadership for the opportunity. I cannot wait to get started.”
Lue, who will make his USA Basketball debut this summer, is a three-time NBA champion. He won two titles as a member of the Los Angeles Lakers in 2000 and 2001 and, as head coach, led the Cleveland Cavaliers to the franchise’s first NBA Championship in 2016.
“I’m excited to add Ty to what is already an outstanding staff,” Kerr said. “He is a brilliant coach who I’ve admired for years. Ty’s experience and expertise will add an important dynamic to the group as we face the challenges ahead. We are lucky to have him.”
Lue has helmed the L.A. Clippers since 2020, taking the team to its first Western Conference Finals in his first season.
Williams has coached with USA Basketball since 2013 and helped the U.S. to a pair of gold medals at the 2014 World Cup and 2016 Olympics.
“After further consideration, I have decided to withdraw as an assistant coach for the 2022-24 USA Men’s National Team. This has been a difficult choice but given the timing and the demands of the commitment, it is the best choice for myself and my family,” Williams said. “I am incredibly grateful to Grant Hill and Coach Kerr, both for giving me the opportunity to be an assistant coach and for their understanding of my decision.
“I have been blessed with multiple opportunities to represent USA Basketball and many of my most cherished moments on the hardwood have come with our beloved program. Thank you to USA Basketball for all that the organization has given my family and me, and I look forward to watching Coach Kerr and the team compete for gold.”
Upon qualification, the USA Men’s National Team will be in action at the 2023 FIBA World Cup Aug. 25-Sept. 10. While the World Cup will be held in The Philippines, Japan and Indonesia, FIBA recently announced that the USA will play all its games in Manila. The sixth and final World Cup Qualifying window is scheduled later this month with the U.S. slated to play at Uruguay on Feb. 23 and at Brazil on Feb. 26. With an 8-2 record, the USA sits atop Group F heading into the final window.
The Paris 2024 Olympics are scheduled for July 26-Aug. 11 in Paris.
The USA men have won four consecutive Olympic gold medals (2008, 2012, 2016 and 2020) and claimed FIBA World Cup titles in two of the past three competitions (2010, 2014).
