COLORADO SPRINGS, Colorado (July 20, 2023) – USA Basketball today announced 12 athletes expected to participate in the 2023 USA Basketball 3x3 Women’s U17 National Team trials in Memphis, Tennessee. The trials will take place July 28-30 during the 2023 NCAA College Basketball Academy, which also includes the U.S. Open Championships.
As trials begin, the USA Basketball 3x3 Junior National Team Committee will be on site to evaluate participating athletes for 2023-24 3x3 junior national teams.
Trials athletes include Imari Berry, Aaliyah Chavez, Jasmine Davidson, Sydney Douglas, Joyce Edwards, Madison Francis, ZaKiyah Johnson, Lola Lampley, Arianna Roberson, Jerzy Robinson, Aubrey Shaw and Zaniyah Williams.
Some of the trials participants have previous USA Basketball 5-on-5 experience.
Edwards is currently a member of the 2023 USA Women’s U19 National Team that is currently competing in Madrid.
Lampley and Robinson recently won a gold medal as they helped lead the USA at the 2023 FIBA Women’s U16 Americas Championship. Douglas and Williams were at trials for the U16 team.
Davidson, Edwards, Johnson, Lampley, Robinson and Williams also attended the 2023 Women’s Junior National Team minicamp in Dallas.
Shaw previously attended trials for the 2022 USA U17 Women’s National Team and the 2021 U16 National Team. Edwards was also at 2022 U17 trials.
Trials will be led by Kelly Carruthers, serving in her third 3x3 assignment with USA Basketball. She previously was an assistant coach for the 2021 and 2022 USA 3x3 U18 National Teams that competed at the FIBA 3x3 U18 World Cup.
Different than 5-on-5, 3x3 is played on a half-court with a 10-minute game clock and 12-second shot clock. Play is continuous, as teams “clear” the ball behind the 2-point line following a made basket, defensive rebound or steal. The first team to score 21 points via 1-point field goals or 2-pointers behind the arc is victorious; or if time expires then the team leading wins.
