The USA (3-2) will face the loser of Canada vs. Argentina on Sunday for the 2025 FIBA Men’s AmeriCup bronze medal.
In Saturday’s semifinal contest against Brazil (4-1), the Americans fell 92-77 in Managua, Nicaragua.
The U.S. is now 7-3 against Brazil and 72-14 all-time at the AmeriCup.
Postgame Notes
Starters: For the third straight game, Tyler Cavanaugh, Jack Cooley, Langston Galloway, Jerian Grant and Javonte Smart started the game. Cavanaugh, Galloway and Grant have started every game of the tournament.
Galloway’s Day: In 28 minutes of action, Galloway scored a team-high 22 points. The USA Basketball veteran shot 7-of-15 overall, including 5-10 3FG. He also pulled down 3 rebounds and had 2 assists. Galloway has scored 20+ twice (URU, 25 points, 8/24) at the tournament.
Rivalry Continues: The U.S. (7) and Brazil (4) rank first and second all-time in AmeriCup gold medals won. Today marked the third time (USA def. BRA 99-96 in 1989; BRA def. USA 93-75 in 2005) the two sides have faced in the semifinals with the opportunity to play for the gold at stake.
The 2025 tournament will also mark the second occasion in which the U.S. and Brazil have faced off twice during the event (2005).
Sunday Stakes: The USA has brought home a medal at 9 AmeriCups. In addition to 7 gold medals, the U.S. has 1 silver and 1 bronze in their history.
Depending on the other semifinals outcome, the Americans will face another nation with strong podium history at the competition (Argentina has 3 gold, 6 silver, 5 bronze; Canada has 1 silver, 4 bronze).
