The USA (2-1) won Pool A with a 90-78 win over Brazil (2-1) at the 2025 FIBA Men’s AmeriCup Tuesday night in Managua, Nicaragua.
The USA are now 7-3 all-time vs. Brazil and 71-13 all-time at the AmeriCup.
The Americans will have a rematch with Uruguay (2-1) on Thursday at 5:40 p.m. ET. The two countries met Sunday evening with Uruguay edging the U.S. 86-85.
Postgame Notes
Begin Again: For the third straight game, Tyler Cavanaugh, Langston Galloway and Jerian Grant started the game. They were joined by Jack Cooley and Javonte Smart, both of whom made their first starts of the tournament.
Andrew Andrews made his USA Basketball debut in Tuesday’s game.
End Game: Trailing 64-67 entering the final quarter, the USA limited the Brazilians to just 11 points on 3-of-13 shooting from the field in the fourth period. The red, while and blue also forced four turnovers in the frame as they outscored the opposition 26-11 to seal the victory.
You Belong with Me: The USA outrebounded Brazil 40-34. Most notably, the Americans held a 13-7 advantage on the offensive glass, leading to 16 second chance points. Cavanaugh and Smart led the team in rebounding with seven apiece, while Rob Baker added six of his own. Cavanaugh leads the team with 9.3 rebounds a contest through three games.
Look What You Made Me Do: Smart led the USA in scoring with 22 points (10-17 FG, 2-4 3FG), including 10 straight points in the third quarter. Smart is the first U.S. player to make 10 field goals in an AmeriCup game since LeBron James made 11 (11-15 FG, 31 points) in the USA’s gold medal win vs. Argentina in 2007. Jahmi’us Ramsey (15), Speedy Smith (11) and Cavanaugh (10) also tallied double-digits for the U.S. tonight.
Style: The USA’s bench contributed 47 points, led by Ramsey’s 15. As a counterpoint, Brazil’s bench scored just nine points. Through three games, the U.S. reserves have averaged 45.0 points per contest.
