The USA women (2-0) continued Group A play the 2025 FIBA U19 Women’s World Cup on Sunday vs. Hungary (1-1) in Brno, Czechia. With another wire-to-wire win, the U.S. took a 79-49 victory.
The stars and stripes will have a day off Monday before finishing the Group Phase vs. Israel on Tuesday.
Postgame Notes
Circle the Wagons: The United States started the game on a 9-0 run over 3:17. Hungary’s first six possessions included three turnovers and five missed field goals before they got on the board with 6:22 showing on the clock. Hungary got within four points (9-5 with 6:04 in first quarter) but the U.S. went on to have a 26-15 advantage after the first quarter and kept Hungary at bay throughout the rest of the contest.
Bumpy Ride: Hungary faced tough defense from the United States, something that carried over from the USA’s opening contest vs. Korea. On the night, Hungary shot 35.9% (19-53 FG), while coughing it up 30 times leading to 34 U.S. points off turnovers.
For the tournament, the USA defense is holding the opposition to 34.4% from the field and has forced 60 turnovers and taken a 109-63 edge on the boards.
On a Shoestring: The opposition has yet to record a 20-point quarter against the U.S. in eight quarters. Hungary’s best quarter tonight was the second, when they had 16 points, while Korea’s best on Saturday was 17 in the first.
Smooth Sailing: Jerzy Robinson provided a consistent presence on offense for the red, white and blue. Following up her 15-point, 7-rebound outing vs. Korea, Robinson contributed 12 points (10 in the first half), 9 rebounds and 3 assists. Sienna Betts compiled the USA’s first double-double of the tournament with 13 points, 13 rebounds (10 DR), 3 steals and 5 blocks. Her 5 blocks are one short of the USA record of 6 set by Lisa Leslie in 1989.
Catch the Sun: In her second game with the USA national team, Kate Harpring used a strong second half to lead her team in scoring and triple up her effort vs. Korea (5 points). Off the bench, she contributed 15 points (2 in the first half), 3 rebounds, 2 steals and 1 block in 17 minutes.
Off to a Flying Start: The United States improved 102-13 overall in U19 competition and have won 23 consecutive games, dating back to the first Group Phase win (79-56 vs. AUS) at the 2019 edition. The competition’s overall win streak record is 25, set up by the USA (last 3 games in 2011, 9 wins in 2013, 7 wins in 2015, 6 wins in 2017).
The U.S. is now 4-0 all-time against Hungary in U19 competition. The closest contest was a 66-49 decision in 2019 with wins today and in 2021 and 2005 by 30+ points.
