The USA completed group play with a 4-0 record after a 104-48 win vs. Mexico (1-3) on Wednesday afternoon at the 2025 FIBA Women’s AmeriCup in Santiago.
With the win, the USA women move to 2-0 against Mexico and 39-9 all time at the AmeriCup.
The tournament will resume on Friday, July 4 with the quarterfinal round. The USA’s opponent and game time has not yet been determined.
Postgame Notes
Starting Out: The USA started with Madison Booker, Mikayla Blakes, Joyce Edwards, Kennedy Smith and Olivia Miles. Edwards has started all four games for the USA, while Booker, Blakes and Smith made their second consecutive starts.
Hot Start: For the first time this tournament, the USA led the game from start to finish and the bombardment started from the opening tip. The USA opened on a 10-2 run and the Americans owned a 43-24 halftime advantage.
Spreading the Wealth: Five Americans scored in double figures, with Gianna Kneepkens leading the way with 20 points (7-10 FG, 4-7 3FG, 2-2 FT) off the bench. Kneepkens is currently averaging 13.3 points at the competition, second only to Edwards (13.5 ppg). Blakes, Edwards and Grace Van Slooten chipped in 15, 13 and 12 points, respectively.
Dynamic Duo: With Kneepkens’ 20 points and Blakes’ 15 points, two players scored 15+ points for the USA for the first time since the U.S. defeated Colombia at the 2023 FIBA Women’s AmeriCup in Leon, Mexico.
Hidalgo Heist: Hannah Hidalgo notched 5 steals in Wednesday’s win, marking the first time that a U.S. player has had 5+ steals at the AmeriCup since Candace Parker had 5 takeaways vs. Argentina in 2007.
Inside Domination: The USA outrebounded Mexico 51-37 and capitalized with a +26 (58-32) points in the paint advantage. Six U.S. players tallied at least 5 boards, while Raegan Beers added 6 rebounds to maintain her team-leading rebounding average (6.5 rpg).
Now Assisting #5: Miles led the way with 10 assists—a USA record at the FIBA Women's AmeriCup. All but one player recorded an assist as the team tallied 30 dimes, the most since the USA posted 34 in the 2021 tournament.
