The USA improved to 3-0 with an 80-62 win over Puerto Rico (1-1) on Monday night at the 2025 FIBA Women’s AmeriCup in Santiago, Chile.
With the win, the USA women move to 4-0 against Puerto Rico and 38-9 all time at the AmeriCup.
Postgame Notes
Starting Out: The USA started with Hannah Hidalgo, Mikayla Blakes, Kennedy Smith, Madison Booker and Joyce Edwards. Edwards made her third straight start, while Smith started for the second consecutive night.
A Tale of Two Halves: The USA led by as many as 9 points in the first half (26-17, 7:29 2Q), but entered the halftime break with just a 35-34 lead. Using a 17-3 run to open the third quarter, the Americans grabbed a 52-37 advantage midway through the quarter. Booker was the USA's highest scorer in the third quarter, notching 7 points behind a hot USA shooting performance (8-14 FG, 4-6 3FG). The USA outscored the Puerto Ricans 25-8 in the third frame and led by double-digits the rest of the game.
Three-pkens: Gianna Kneepkens led the USA in scoring with 14 points (5-8 FG, 4-5 3FG) off the bench. Her 7 3-point makes (58.3% 3FG%) at the competition lead the U.S. Six players scored 9+ points for the USA, including Hidalgo who scored 10 points.
On the Boards: Grace Van Slooten and Olivia Miles led the game with 7 rebounds apiece. As a team, the USA won the rebounding battle 42-33, including grabbing 11 offensive rebounds leading to 11 second-chance points.
Miles In Front: For the third consecutive game, Miles led the USA with 8 assists. She leads the Americans with 7.7 assists per game (23 total assists) and for the second straight game was the USA’s most efficient player (21 EFF).
Book It: Booker had her breakout game of the tournament, scoring 9 points and contributing 5 assists, 3 blocks and 2 steals in a strong two-way effort. Booker was one of four U.S. players with multiple steals in the victory.
