The USA Men’s National Team advanced to the 2024 Paris Olympics semifinal with a 122-87 win over Brazil. The USA and Brazil met for the 10th time at the Olympics and the first time since 1996, which was also a quarterfinal matchup. The USA advance to the semifinals, set for Thursday, Aug. 8 at Bercy Arena in Paris, for a rematch against Serbia at 3 p.m. ET on USA Network and Peacock.
In their 20th Olympics, USA Basketball holds a 142-5 overall record and is 34-1 since 2004. The U.S. have medaled in every Olympics in which they’ve participated.
Starting Out: Coach Steve Kerr brought out Stephen Curry, Devin Booker, Jrue Holiday, LeBron James and Joel Embiid. The 5 started in the USA’s first game of the Olympics against Serbia and are the first lineup to start multiple games together at the Olympic Games. The starters combined for 46 of 63 first half points to set the pace for the Americans.
Give Me the Rundown: After both teams traded scores to start, the U.S. pulled ahead by 10 (16-6) for the first time on a Booker 3-pointer with 5:59 left in the first quarter. The 3 bookended a 14-2 USA run. The Americans, who started off hot by making 11 of their first 14 shots, took a 33-21 advantage into the second frame.
The red, white and blue then advanced the lead further, ending the half on a 15-0 run to force a 27-point lead, 63-36. It was a group effort, as 11 of 12 players recorded scores in the first stanza. All 12 players reached the scoring column by the game's end.
Century Mark: The U.S. reached the century mark for the fourth consecutive gam e. They join the 1992 team as the only team to score 100+ points in each of their first four contests at The Games.
The team’s 122 points are the most by a team in an elimination game in the competition this century.
Helping History: The U.S. men dished out 31 assists in the win. Tonight was their second consecutive game with 30+ assists, marking the first time the team has done so since 1992.
The U.S. are the only team in the tournament to have multiple games with 30+ helpers.
KD Passes Leslie: Kevin Durant recorded 11 points (4-8 FG, 3-3 FT), 4 rebounds, 3 assists and 1 steal. He now has 494 career points, passing Lisa Leslie for most points (488) by an American, male or female, at the Olympic Games.
Open Book: Booker led the team in scoring for the first time this tournament, recording 18 points (6-9 FG, 5-7 3FG, 1-1 FT), 3 rebounds and 3 assists. He joins Kevin Durant as the second American, and ninth player from any team, at the Olympics to make 5+ 3s in a game.
Ant Bully: Anthony Edwards finished with 17 points (6-10 FG, 3-7 3FG), 5 rebounds, 2 assists and 1 steal. Edwards has scored 10+ points in every game thus far and is scoring efficiently, shooting 63% from the field and 50% from beyond the arc.
Processing: Embiid had 8 points in the first quarter and led the USA with 14 at the halfway point. He ended with 14 points (5-6 FG, 3-3 3FG), 7 rebounds, 1 assist and 1 block. He has scored 14 or more points in his last two games.
LeParis: James was a focal point on offense from the start for the U.S., having 10 points (4-4 FG, 2-2 FT) and 8 assists after two quarters. He finished with 12 points and 9 assists to go along with 5 rebounds and 1 steal in 17 minutes.
His 9 assists tied his second-most ever in a game at the Olympics (9 vs. Serbia, 2024).
