COLORADO SPRINGS, Colorado (June 17, 2024) - The official schedule for the 3x3 Basketball Olympic Games competition has been announced by FIBA in advance of the Olympic Games Paris 2024. The USA 3x3 Men’s and Women’s national teams are slated to compete July 30-Aug. 5, 2024, at Place de la Concorde in Paris.
The 3x3 competition will feature eight teams each in men’s and women’s. Every team will play each other before a play-in for teams placed 3rd through 6th with the top two teams advancing directly to the semifinals. Teams 7 and 8 in both pools will be eliminated.
“With less than 40 days to the Opening Ceremony in Paris, we are excited to know USA Basketball’s 3x3 pool play schedule as Games preparations continue,” said Jim Tooley, USA Basketball CEO. “We are looking forward to cheering the women’s team as they defend Olympic gold and watching the men’s squad compete for the first time on the Olympic stage.”
Making their Olympic debut in Paris, the U.S. men open group play against Serbia on July 30, followed by Poland on July 31 with both games tipping off at 4:35 p.m. ET. The Americans face off against both Lithuania and Latvia on Aug. 1 at 1:05 p.m. ET and 5:05 p.m. ET, respectively, before seeing France at 12:35 p.m. ET and China at 4:35 p.m. ET on Aug. 2. The final pool game pits the United State against Netherlands at 1:05 p.m. ET on Aug. 4 prior to the play-in stage later that day. The tournament wraps Aug. 5 with the semifinals and medal games.
In March, USA Basketball announced that Canyon Barry, Jimmer Fredette, Kareem Maddox and Dylan Travis will represent the United States in Paris under the tutelage of head coach Joe Lewandowski and assistant James Fraschilla.
The American women, who are reigning Olympic champions, face Germany in the first 3x3 action of the Games at 11:30 a.m. ET on July 30. The tournament continues July 31 at 3:30 p.m. ET with a contest between the USA and Azerbaijan. The United States will face Australia and Spain on Aug. 1 at 7:00 a.m. ET and 3:30 p.m. ET, respectively. On Aug. 2, look for the U.S. to match up with France at 7:00 a.m. ET and Canada at 12:00 p.m. ET. Pool play wraps with the USA and China at 1:05 p.m. ET on Aug. 3 immediately followed by the play-in games. After a women’s day off on Aug. 4, the tournament concludes with the semifinals and medal rounds on Aug. 5.
USA Basketball announced earlier this month the four athletes who will represent the United States at the Olympics, including first timers Cameron Brink, Cierra Burdick, Rhyne Howard and Hailey Van Lith. The team will be led by head coach Jennifer Rizzotti and assistant coach Tammi Reiss.
Broadcast information, opponent rosters and more will be announced at a later date. For more information about the FIBA 3x3 Olympic basketball tournaments, click here.
FIBA previously announced that USA Basketball automatically qualified the men’s and women’s 3x3 teams for the 2024 Olympics. In each category, the United States was one of three countries that qualified based on FIBA 3x3 world rankings as of Oct. 31, 2023, and bypassed the 2024 Olympic Qualifying Tournaments. In total, USA Basketball will be represented by four teams – including 5-on-5 men and women – at the 2024 Olympic Games, set for July 26-Aug. 11, 2024.
Different than 5-on-5, 3x3 is played on a half-court with a 10-minute game clock and 12-second shot clock. Play is continuous, as teams “clear” the ball behind the 2-point line following a made basket, defensive rebound or steal. The first team to score 21 points via 1-point field goals or 2-pointers behind the arc is victorious; or if time expires then the team leading wins.
