COLORADO SPRINGS, Colorado (March 26, 2024) – USA Basketball announced today the 2024 USA Basketball 3x3 Men’s National Team, which will compete at the 2024 Olympic Games Paris.
The four-member roster includes Canyon Barry, Jimmer Fredette, Kareem Maddox and Dylan Travis. The roster was selected by the USA Basketball 3x3 Men’s National Team Committee.
“We are very excited and proud to announce the first USA Basketball 3x3 Men’s National Team that will compete at the Olympics,” said Jay Demings, USA Basketball 3x3 national team director and member of the USA Basketball 3x3 men’s selection committee. “These four athletes have impressive USA Basketball competitive results and have been tremendous representatives of our country. We appreciate all the athletes that attended training camp to compete for a spot on the roster.”
The quartet began competing together for USA Basketball at the 2022 FIBA 3x3 Men’s AmeriCup, where they brought home the gold medal. Since then, the foursome won the gold medal at the 2023 Pan American Games and silver at the 2023 FIBA 3x3 World Cup.
The ensemble also represented USA Basketball as Team Miami on the 2023 FIBA Men’s World Tour. Accomplishments on the pro circuit include becoming the first American team to win a World Tour event since 2019 (FIBA 3x3 Cebu Masters and FIBA 3x3 Abu Dhabi Masters). Overall, as Team Miami, the U.S. men recorded four top-3 finishes on the tour.
As previously announced, Joe Lewandowski, who has been coaching and advising the USA 3x3 program since 2014, will serve as the head coach and he will be assisted by James Fraschilla.
"Representing your country at the Olympics is the ultimate honor,” said Lewandowski. “I am so happy for these guys after all the hard work and dedication they have put into 3x3 basketball. USA Basketball has the highest of standards and now the hard work begins to reach our gold-medal dream.”
In related news, USA Basketball also announced that the 2024 USA 3x3 Men’s National Team will hold a training camp in conjunction with the NCAA Men’s Final Four® April 3-7 in Phoenix. Team activity includes an exhibition game against Puerto Rico at the Reese’s Men’s Final Four Friday (State Farm Stadium); a modified exhibition game against Puerto Rico during halftime of the second semifinal game on Saturday (State Farm Stadium); and an open practice and autograph session at the Men’s Final Four Fan Fest on Sunday (Phoenix Convention Center).
FIBA previously announced that USA Basketball automatically qualified the men’s and women’s 3x3 teams for the 2024 Olympics. In each category, the United States was one of three countries that qualified based on FIBA 3x3 world rankings as of Oct. 31, 2023, and will bypass the 2024 Olympic Qualifying Tournaments. In total, USA Basketball will be represented by four teams at the 2024 Olympic Games, including 5-on-5 men and women and 3x3 men and women. The Paris 2024 Olympics are set for July 26-Aug. 11, with the 3x3 basketball competition set for July 30-Aug.5 at Place de la Concorde.
Different than 5-on-5, 3x3 is played on a half-court with a 10-minute game clock and 12-second shot clock. Play is continuous, as teams “clear” the ball behind the 2-point line following a made basket, defensive rebound or steal. The first team to score 21 points via 1-point field goals or 2-pointers behind the arc is victorious; or if time expires then the team leading wins.
