COLORADO SPRINGS, Colorado (March 19, 2024) – The draw to determine the preliminary groups for the 2024 Olympic Games 5-on-5 men’s and women’s competitions was held today at the Patrick Baumann House of Basketball in Mies, Switzerland. The USA men will face Serbia, South Sudan and the winner of the Olympic Qualifying Tournament (OQT) in Puerto Rico in the first round as part of Group C. The USA women will face Belgium, Germany and Japan in the first round as part of Group C.
The 2024 Olympic Games are set for July 26-Aug. 11. The 5-on-5 Olympic basketball group phase will take place in Lille, France, before the tournament moves to Paris for knockout and medal rounds.
“As excitement builds for the 2024 Olympic Games, the draw for USA’s 5-on-5 first round opponents is an important step in the scope of USA Basketball’s preparations,” said Jim Tooley, USA Basketball CEO. “We are looking forward to what lies ahead as all four USA Basketball teams this summer and are excited for the high level of competition we will see in the lead up to the Games and when we arrive in France.”
The U.S. men open group play in Lille against Serbia on July 28, followed by South Sudan on July 31 and the winner of OQT in Puerto Rico on Aug. 3. The Americans are set to face Serbia in the Olympics for the first time since 2016. South Sudan will make their Olympic debut. The U.S. will host South Sudan on July 20 in London as part of the 2024 USA Basketball Showcase.
The 5-on-5 men’s Olympic basketball tournament includes 12 teams, eight of which have already qualified, including Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Japan, Serbia, South Sudan and USA. The remaining four teams will earn Olympic berths based on the results of the 2024 Olympic Qualifying Tournaments set for July 2-7 in Piraeus (Greece), Riga (Latvia), San Juan (Puerto Rico) and Valencia (Spain).
The OQT in Puerto Rico will feature Bahrain, Italy, Ivory Coast, Lithuania, Mexico and Puerto Rico.
In Lille, the American women open group play against Japan on July 29, followed by Belgium on Aug. 1 and Germany on 4. The U.S. has a combined 29-2 overall record against its Group C opponents. This is the second straight Olympics USA is grouped with Japan and marks the first time the U.S. will face Belgium and Germany at the Games.
The 5-on-5 women’s Olympic basketball tournament includes 12 teams, including Australia, Belgium, Canada, China, France, Germany, Japan, Nigeria, Puerto Rico, Serbia, Spain and USA.

In total, USA Basketball will be represented by four teams at the 2024 Olympic Summer Games, including 5-on-5 men and women and 3x3 men and women. The USA are reigning Olympic champions in 5-on-5 men and women and 3x3 women, with 3x3 men set to make their Olympic debut this summer.
