COLORADO SPRINGS, Colorado (Feb. 2, 2024) – USA Basketball announced today the 2024 USA Basketball Men’s Junior National Team coaching staffs. Leading the 2024 USA Men’s U18 National Team is Tommy Lloyd (University of Arizona) who will be assisted by Grant McCasland (Texas Tech University) and Micah Shrewsberry (University of Notre Dame). The head coach of the 2024 USA Men’s U17 National Team is Sharman White (Pace Academy) and supporting him are assistants Scott Fitch (Fairport High School) and Chet Mason (Brush High School).
Coaching staff selections for the USA Men’s U18 National Team were made by the USA Basketball Junior National Team Committee. For the USA Men’s U17 National Team, coaching selections were made by the USA Basketball Men’s Developmental National Team Committee. All selections were approved by the USA Basketball Board of Directors.
Lloyd, McCasland and Shrewsberry will lead the Americans at the 2024 FIBA U18 Men’s AmeriCup (date and location to be announced by FIBA at a later date).
Lloyd took the reins at Arizona in 2021 and has led the Wildcats to record-breaking success. His 61 victories during his first two seasons set the NCAA record. In his first season with Arizona in 2022, Lloyd was named National Coach of the Year by NABC, USBWA and Associated Press. Lloyd was previously an assistant at Gonzaga University for 22 seasons. He will be serving his first USA Basketball head coaching assignment as he was a court coach for the 2022 USA Men’s U18 National Team. He has previously served USA Basketball as a committee member.
“This is a tremendous honor to serve as the head coach of USA Basketball’s Men’s U18 National Team,” Lloyd said. “I have always loved FIBA basketball and the different ways the game is played around the world. I look forward to this opportunity to now compete in a FIBA competition while representing USA Basketball.”
McCasland is in his first season as the head coach of the Red Raiders. Previously, while the head coach at University of North Texas, he led the Mean Green to three Conference USA titles (2020, 2021, 2022), their first NCAA Tournament victory and two postseason tournament championships (2018 CBI, 2023 NIT). He will enter his first USA Basketball coaching assignment after serving as a court coach for the 2021 U19 National Team.
Shrewsberry is in his first season at Notre Dame after an accomplished career spanning the NBA and college ranks. Shrewsberry’s coaching resume includes being the head coach at Pennsylvania State University (2021-23) and Indiana University South Bend (2005-07); and an assistant coach at Purdue (2019-21, 2011-13), Boston Celtics (2013-19), Butler University (2008-11), DePauw University (2001-03) and Wabash College (1999-00). He will also make his USA Basketball coaching debut but was previously a court coach for the 2023 U19 National Team.
The FIBA U18 Men’s AmeriCup takes place every two years with the USA winning 10 gold medals, including six straight.
White, Fitch and Mason will lead the U.S. at the 2024 FIBA U17 Men’s World Cup from June 29-July 7 in Turkey. The trio coached the USA Men’s U16 National Team to a gold medal at the 2023 FIBA U16 AmeriCup (formerly known as the FIBA Men’s U16 Americas Championship) in Merida, Mexico, last summer.
White has an abundance of USA Basketball experience and was recently named the head coach of the 2024 USA Men’s Nike Hoop Summit Team. Prior to the 2023 FIBA U16 Men’s AmeriCup, White captained the USA to the gold at the 2022 FIBA U17 Men’s World Cup and at the 2021 FIBA U16 Men’s AmeriCup. White is also involved in the various USA Basketball Men’s Junior National Team minicamps. As the head coach at Pace Academy (Atlanta), White recently picked up his 500th victory and has won six straight state championships.
“I am honored and humbled to have the opportunity, along with Coach Fitch and Coach Mason, to lead a group of dynamic young men to represent our country and contend for the FIBA U17 Men’s World Cup,” White said. “This event will bring the best teams and players the world has to offer and we are looking forward to the challenge of competition for the gold medal.”
The Men’s U17 Men’s National Team will mark Fitch’s 17th assignment with USA Basketball. In addition to being a member of the White-led U16 staff in 2023, Fitch was also a coach at the April and October USA Basketball Men’s Junior National Team minicamps. Fitch is the head coach at Fairport High School in Fairport, New York.
Mason made his USA Basketball coaching debut in 2022 at the Nike Hoop Summit. He has also been an on-court coach at several junior national team minicamps. A standout player at Miami University, Mason is the current head coach at Brush High School in Cleveland.
The FIBA U17 Men’s World Cup has been held biennially since 2010 with the U.S. winning the gold medal in each edition of the competition (six straight).
