COLORADO SPRINGS, Colorado (January 18, 2024) – USA Basketball, the national governing body for the sport of basketball in the United States, will commemorate its 50th Anniversary during 2024.
USA Basketball will celebrate its anniversary throughout the year in a variety of ways, including a digital content series highlighting notable moments in the organization’s illustrious history, celebrating the sport of basketball in communities around the country and helping to grow the game in the United States and beyond.
“We are excited to celebrate USA Basketball’s historical milestone in 2024,” USA Basketball CEO Jim Tooley said. “2024 is going to be a remarkable year with the Paris Olympics and many other international competitions. It’s important to us to celebrate all that our organization has achieved over the last five decades.
“Two cornerstones of our mission are having competitive excellence on the court and providing developmental opportunities to grow the sport, and we look forward to celebrating the past, present and future of USA Basketball in 2024.”
As part of its celebration, USA Basketball has unveiled a special 50th Anniversary logo that will be used throughout 2024. The familiar USA Basketball shield is featured with past elements of the ABAUSA logo. Golden accents, reflecting USA Basketball’s competitive excellence, complete the 50th Anniversary logo.
Founded in 1974 as the Amateur Basketball Association of the United States of America (ABAUSA), USA Basketball was renamed in 1989 shortly after FIBA, the governing body of basketball worldwide, modified its rules to allow professional basketball players to participate in international competitions. USA Basketball is made up of 21 member organizations representing professional, collegiate, high school and youth basketball, including the National Basketball Association (NBA), NBA G League, Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA), National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA), National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA), National Federation of State High School Association (NFHS), and the Amateur Athletic Union (AAU).
As the recognized governing body for basketball in the United States by the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) and the United States Olympic and Paralympic Committee (USOPC), USA Basketball is responsible for the selection and training of USA teams that compete in FIBA-sponsored basketball competitions and select national events, and for the development of youth basketball initiatives addressing player development, coach education and safety.
The 50th Anniversary celebration will also include themed assets on usab.com.
