COLORADO SPRINGS, Colorado (August 15, 2023) – The USA Basketball Foundation, which was launched in 2019, today announced John Thompson III as the fifth member of the board of directors, which helps to oversee the foundation’s efforts.
“Stepping into the board of directors of the USA Basketball Foundation is an incredible honor for me,” Thompson III said. “Having focused my career on building character and skills beyond the game, I feel a personal connection to the mission of fostering inclusivity, nurturing talent and harnessing basketball as a force for a positive change. I’m thrilled to contribute to this remarkable organization and their work to empower a new generation of athletes and leaders.”

Thompson has a distinguished background in basketball, highlighted by 13 years as the head men’s basketball coach at Georgetown University. Currently the vice president of Monumental Basketball, Thompson III has ties to USA Basketball as he served as an assistant coach under Jeff Van Gundy in 2019 Men’s World Cup Qualifying games. Off the court, he is an active member of the community with participation in several nonprofit boards, including leading the John Thompson III Foundation.
In addition to Thompson III, the board is comprised of Brent Baumberger (USA Basketball chief financial officer); two-time Olympic and 2010 FIBA Women’s World Cup gold medalist Swin Cash (New Orleans Pelicans vice president of basketball operations and team development); David Denenberg (NBA senior vice president of global media distribution and business affairs) and JoAn Scott (NCAA managing director for men’s basketball).
The USA Basketball Foundation is a 509(c)3 supporting organization founded to conduct programming and generate support for USA Basketball, a nonprofit organization and the National Governing Body for the sport of basketball in United States of America.
