COLORADO SPRINGS, Colorado – The draw to determine the eight preliminary groups for the 2023 FIBA Men’s World Cup was held today in Manila, host city for select Group and all Final Round games. The United States will face Greece, Jordan and New Zealand in the first round of the Group Phase as part of Group C. The 2023 FIBA World Cup is set for Aug. 25-Sept. 10 in Manila, Jakarta and Okinawa, Japan.
“Following the 2023 FIBA World Cup Draw, we are excited to know what the first round holds as we look forward to the competition,” said Grant Hill, USA Basketball Men’s National Team managing director. “This is one of the most arduous basketball tournaments in the world featuring some of the most gifted athletes and coaches in our game. We know the level of preparation and focus we will have to bring to the floor in Manila and are eager for the challenge ahead.”
The U.S. opens first round play against New Zealand on Aug. 26, followed by Greece on Aug. 28 and Jordan on Aug. 30. The USA will play all Group games at Manila’s Mall of Asia Arena. Game times and broadcast information will be announced later.
The remaining 28 teams were split into seven groups. Groups A, B and D will also play in Manila, Groups E and F will head to Okinawa and Groups G and H to Jakarta.
Teams will remain in their respective host cities through two rounds of competition with the top two teams from each group qualifying for the second round of the Group Phase. The bottom two teams from each group will play the Classification Round for places 17-32. Teams will descend on Manila for Final Phase games, including the quarterfinals, semifinals and finals. Steve Kerr (Golden State Warriors) will serve as head coach of the 2023 USA World Cup Team. He will be assisted by Erik Spoelstra (Miami Heat), Tyronn Lue (L.A. Clippers) and Mark Few (Gonzaga University). The 12-man USA roster will be selected by Hill and announced at a later date.
The United States has won the World Cup five times, including in two of the last three editions.
Before arriving in Manila, the USA World Cup Team will begin training camp in Las Vegas in early August before playing a series of exhibition games as part of the USA Basketball Showcase. Last month, USA Basketball announced Showcase games versus Slovenia on Aug. 12 and Spain on Aug. 13 in Malaga, Spain, and with Greece and Germany on Aug. 18 and 20, respectively, in Abu Dhabi.
