COLORADO SPRINGS, Colorado – USA Basketball announced today the four members of Team Miami set to compete at Utsunomiya 2023, the first stop on the 2023 FIBA 3x3 Men’s World Tour. Team Miami’s roster features the same squad who won gold last November at the 2022 FIBA 3x3 AmeriCup and includes Canyon Barry, Jimmer Fredette, Kareem Maddox and Dylan Travis.
For a second consecutive year, USA Basketball is assembling teams to compete on the 3x3 World Tour. The team was selected by the USA Basketball 3x3 Men’s National Team Selection Committee. USA Basketball will field two teams to compete at select World Tour and FIBA 3x3 Challenger Series events throughout the year. Full rosters for both teams will be announced later. Additionally, two USA Basketball teams will compete on the 2023 FIBA 3x3 Women’s Series, with rosters to be announced.
Barry was named MVP of the 2022 3x3 AmeriCup. Prior to 2022, Barry helped the USA take home gold at the 2021 3x3 AmeriCup and 2019 FIBA 3x3 World Cup.
Maddox was a member of the 2021 3x3 AmeriCup, 2021 3x3 Olympic Qualifying Tournament and 2019 3x3 World Cup teams. He also helped the U.S. claim the inaugural 3x3 Pan American Games gold medal in 2019. Maddox grabbed three consecutive USA Basketball 3X Nationals gold medals in 2017, 2018 and 2019 as a member of Ariel Slow & Steady.
Travis made his USA Basketball debut with the 2022 3x3 AmeriCup team. As a longtime member of 3BALL Omaha, he competed at the 2021 and 2022 USA Basketball 3X Nationals and took home first place in 2021. He has also played in select 3X Regional and 3x3 World Tour events since 2019.
Fredette made his first 3x3 appearance with USA Basketball at the 2022 AmeriCup. Prior to playing 3x3, Fredette had fashioned an illustrious 5-on-5 career having played seven seasons in the NBA after being the 10th overall pick by the Milwaukee Bucks in the 2011 NBA Draft. Most recently, Fredette played with the Shanghai Sharks in the Chinese Basketball Association (CBA) before returning to the U.S. in 2021.
The full schedule for the 2023 FIBA 3x3 Men’s World Tour is here.
Different than 5-on-5, 3x3 is played on a half-court with a 10-minute game clock and 12-second shot clock. Play is continuous, as teams “clear” the ball behind the 2-point line following a made basket, defensive rebound or steal. The first team to score 21 points via 1-point field goals or 2-pointers behind the arc is victorious; or if time expires then the team leading wins.
